“Potato Skins with Boursin Dip” was enough to entice me to venture into The Fort on a rainy saturday night. “Big Bad Wolf” and “Potato Skins with Boursin Dip” has been alive on my Instagram, Facebook and Twitter feed for quite some time now. I’ve always been intrigued so tonight, we went.

The place is tucked away in Fairways Tower and has a cozy, inviting vibe to it. The assorted chairs, the comfy couches, the bright airy space and eclectic playlist makes BBW fun and inviting like a typical New York/Brooklyn coffee shop where you come to hang out with your friends.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t that hungry so I was attracted to the little plates and not anything else. Turns out they’re not really that little so it ended up being a filling meal.

IMG_1277

The main attraction – Potato Skins with Boursin Dip – Very addicting. I see what the hype is about 🙂 Potatoes are sliced so thin making them gloriously crisp and tasty. The boursin dip gives it extra flavor.
IMG_1281

Shrimp Gambas in Crab Fat – Small portion (strange compared to the other plates) but very good. You can really taste the crab (no extenders here!) we just wish they gave you a bigger portion.
IMG_1285

Honey Glazed Chicken Wings – Sweet, juicy and decent sized chicken w9ings, what more can you ask for!
IMG_1282

French Onion Soup – Really liked this soup! They are generous with the cheese, among other things.
IMG_1284

Melon & Parma Ham Salad – This is a good salad. There’s just not a lot of Parma Ham and there’s only four pieces of melon. Not enough to name the dish after it, I think. We liked how they gave you lots of parmesan cheese.
IMG_1279

Goat Cheese and Chorizo Rolls – Salty Chorizo, rich creamy goat cheese, light filo pastry and a mild tangy dip. Liked the flavors and the combination worked well.
IMG_1286

Portions – In the dishes we ordered, we felt that we got good-enough-to-share sized portions which we didn’t expect. We thought it would be more tapas-style for these dishes but turned out they could be meals in themselves.

Price – wise, a little on the high side, at least for us. Our entire meal came to about Php1,500 + SC = Php1,633

I definitely want to go back and try their main courses. 🙂

Mangetsu-Yummy…Mangetsu-Delicious…Mangetsu-Awesome… hahaha okay I’ll stop with the bad puns. I can’t help it, Mangetsu is SO GOOD.

Without further ado, here is my family’s experience with Mangetsu. We got a little carried away with the ordering and had enough food for 10 people so you’re in for a visual treat! Enjoy!

When we ordered Miso Soup, the lady asked us, “Red or White?” We all stared at each other blankly and asked what the difference was. Waitress said the red one is more salty but didn’t elaborate too much so we went with what we knew. This was delicious. Will try the red one next time.

The Cheese Risotto came highly recommended by a good friend of mine. She wasn’t kidding. Oh my gosh, this is HEAVEN. It’s incredible. We went crazy over this. It’s good to share because it’s quite rich but if you want to indulge and have the whole thing to yourself, I won’t blame you. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

IMG_1257

Fried Rice – It was okay. Kind of dry.

IMG_1258

Cheese Tempura – I forget the official name but it’s slices of tempura-battered Camembert cheese, with a honey and salt dip. I liked this a lot. I finished the entire thing because my family was too full to eat. So bad for my diet but so worth it. <3

IMG_1268

Ebi Tempura – Fresh, crunchy, not greasy and in a filling (larger than usual) portion. Everything you could ask for in tempura and more! They give you the heads which are also yummy to munch on.

IMG_1269

Tori Karaage with 3 Salts – ORDER THIS! I command you! The chicken is served hot and juicy – tender and flavorful on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The salts are just bonus. Perfect with rice. We couldn’t finish it all because by the time it arrived we already ate our weight in food so we took some of it home. It’ll be breakfast tomorrow. I’m excited.

IMG_1265

Agedashi Tofu – My mom ordered this thinking it was a teeny tiny bowl of tofu. No, no it’s not. It’s a large bowl with large tofu. I didn’t get to try this but she loved it.

IMG_1267

Spring Rolls – These are rolls filled with lettuce and beef. Unfortunately I cannot speak to this because I didn’t get to try it.

IMG_1263

Spicy Tuna Roll & Assorted Sushi Plate – I can’t remember the last time I’ve had sushi this fresh and this good in Manila. The Japanese rice is soft and served warm/room temp which is how I like it. (Other lesser restaurants serve their sushi cold from being refrigerated.. not the best way to do it).  You can really taste the quality in the fish, in the rice and in the wasabi. I read in other blogs that the Sushi Chef is from Japan which makes the sushi better and more authentic. 😀 I wish they had soft shell crab on the menu. That’s my absolute favorite, I look for that on the menu every time I visit a Japanese restaurant. I hope they put it on the menu eventually.

This is Beef. I don’t recall what the official dish is called. Under that delicious, tender, flavorful mound of meat are some french fries (just for everyone’s information). I don’t know what they put in the sauce but I liked it a lot. It had a tanginess to it that brought out the meatiness of the beef.

Here is our Bill. Told you so. I wasn’t kidding. We really got carried away with all the food. I’m heading to the Gym tomorrow to pay for my sins.

Know before you go:
1) Portions are generous and good to share. Bring your friends!
2) Come hungry, leave happy.
3) While not required, I’d recommend making a reservation because it does get kinda busy.
4) The food comes fast but don’t worry, you can eat slow.
5) Loved the ambiance but no worries, the dress code is not formal. It’s casual.

I was bored in class the other day. Thankfully we get our own computers. While my peers stalked their friends on Facebook, I decided to do a little goal setting. This is what I found:

I think it’s an absolutely gorgeous timepiece and the fact that we share the same name means we’re made for each other. Unfortunately, the $150,000++ price tag disagrees. So someday, maybe in a different life when I’m a US Dollar billionaire. Until then, it’ll remain a very sweet dream. 🙂

CleverBuy. Growl. Those bastards.

My readers would know that I’m really into group buying and online discount deals. My favorite websites are Deal Grocer, CashCashPinoy and Groupon Philippines. Thanks to these sites, I’m able to experience some really fun things and places at great prices.

The ONE time I strayed away from my favorite website trifecta was to purchase from CleverBuy. Bad Idea. I bought 6 vouchers for laser hair removal at a spa in Makati. To date, I’ve claimed three out of the six. I should have known already that there would be a problem when I was trying to set my appointment. I hurdled that setback and successfully started using my vouchers, thinking that would be the last of my problems. No, now I’m facing a bigger dilemma — I can’t claim the remainder of my vouchers at all, nor can I get a refund.

Why? Well, CleverBuy is closed. As in “ran away with people’s money” kind of closed. Luckily my peso losses amount to a mere Php 1,000. While this is by no means a small amount, some people are demanding refunds for vouchers valued up to Php50,000. This isn’t even counting the merchants who have administered services/food/products for CleverBuy vouchers without any compensation or payment. I feel horrible for these victims and I hope that the DTI can help them get even a partial refund. The news articles I’ve read aren’t too optimistic. Seems like they have no recourse. The owners (of both the travel agency and CleverBuy) have closed bank accounts and disappeared off the face of the earth.

I already know that this incident may result in tighter regulations for these sites like CleverBuy. I just hope it doesn’t deter people from online discount deals for good. Honestly there’s some really great stuff on the internet. You just have to be savvy. My number one rule when it comes to websites like this is: DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Some sub-rules –

  • Think before you buy. Think really hard. Try not to impulse buy.
  • Don’t feel pressured by the time limit. Just because it’s expiring doesn’t mean they won’t have it again. Check other websites, usually they’ll have similar deals. Massage deals are a dime a dozen. Trust me, I’ve been doing this a long time.
  • Stick to the bigger, more prominent deal sites that offer quality deals.
  • Background check the Deal Site on their Facebook Page or Blogs and see what people have to say.
  • Run an even bigger background check on the merchant. If this is a travel voucher, check out the travel agency. If it’s a Spa, Google the spa. Sometimes the quality of the merchant isn’t portrayed accurately. I see this most commonly with spas and resorts. It looks amazing in photos but a Google search will show that it’s just some dinky, disgusting place.
  • Stay away from the merchants/deals whom you can’t Google. For example, if it’s a product deal wherein it seems like it’s just one guy who is buying and selling a certain product, don’t do it. I took this risk before on Cashcashpinoy for a Bladeless Fan. It’s a good thing it worked out but I’ve heard from others that usually it doesn’t. (Item doesn’t get delivered, etc) I haven’t done it since.
  • Read the terms and conditions very carefully.
  • Be Forewarned – travel deals are CHEAP which means that more people are trying to use their vouchers and therefore you will have more difficulty booking on the date you want. There are a finite number of promo seats and promo fares. Be wary of sites that offer unlimited vouchers for super cheap deals. How can they serve all these deals when there are so many factors to consider (peak fares, promos, capacity of hotels, planes, etc). Expect that you will run into problems.

There’s dozens of these discount sites that pop up every day and only a few of them are reputable. If all else fails, remember the golden rule — If it’s too cheap and too good to be true, then it probably is.

I’m resurfacing from my days of silence to make a post about my mum. It’s her birthday today. Mom usually spends her birthday in California with my tita but this year we’re in Manila. It was a quiet birthday for her, she’s been so busy so there hasn’t been time to prepare for even a small get-together with friends/family. We heard mass, went for a quick dinner at Trattoria Italia and watched MIB III in style at Eastwood’s Ultra 7 Cinema.

I love my mom to pieces and can’t even describe how grateful I am to have her. She’s my biggest fan, my most honest critic and everything in between. I’ll consider myself lucky if I grow up to be even half as cool and half as gorgeous as she is. Happy Birthday Mom!

As a testament to how amazing she is, in addition to being a businesswoman, a dreamer, and a mom, she’s also a blogger! Make sure to check her out at www.ohmybuhay.com and leave her a birthday greet. 🙂

Here’s some photos from our day:

We bought mom flowers. She adores flowers. 😀
