So you and your boyfriend are in love. You share everything together. You trust him 100%. That’s great and all during the good times but what happens during the bad times? Trust me, there will be bad times.

So this is why sharing a bank account is bad:

1) If you fight or break up, what happens to the money? Who takes it?

2) Since you share the money, who decides how to spend it?

3) What if you want to buy something for yourself and your significant other doesn’t approve?

3a) Does this mean you have to ask permission from them?! Oh my god. No! How demeaning. Is your significant other your boss as well?

4) What if you deposit more money into the account and all your Significant Other does is spend? What if they don’t contribute? That’s not fair.

Bottom line, don’t share bank accounts. It’s a headache and arguing over money can make any stable relationship rocky. Also you don’t want your decisions on the things you buy to be dependent on someone else. You want independence! It’s your money, no one should tell you how to spend it. If you MUST share bank accounts, make sure you keep your own personal one, no matter how little your savings are. If something (good or bad) happens, at least you have control and the ability to take care of yourself. 🙂

I agree. there should be shared but there should be personal bank accounts as well. That’s what I envision in my married life in the future.
